Yves Saint Laurent（イヴサンローラン）was born in French Algeria in 1936. He loved theater from an early age, even designing stage sets, and possessed exceptional talent for sketching and painting. At the age of 21, following the death of Christian Dior, he succeeded as the chief designer of Dior's atelier.

In 1961, he founded a joint venture with his friend Pierre Bergé, and in 1966, Yves Saint Laurent opened his first ready-to-wear boutique, "Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche," on the Left Bank of the Seine in Paris. Through the bold use of colors and materials, Yves Saint Laurent brought a new look and feel to fashion, established his leadership in the design world, and became known as a legendary figure who would live on throughout the 20th century.
